Jayden's Diary — Episode 6

Hi Jay, how are you faring, and how’s engineering treating you? You know, final year has been taking so much of me, as we have lots of projects stacked on another lot to do in school, so dear brother, forgive me for not checking up on you all that while.

I spoke with mum over the phone yesterday and she told me the things you are going through, how Dad was frustrated and how you are getting so used to your space.

I understand how challenging these times may be, because I have seen how people in their personal and unfair orthodoxies regard holders of questions like yours.

It is not abnormal that you are feeling the way you feel, as a matter of fact, there should come a time in a person’s life when they have questions about the order of things. It is an index of a growing mind, and I am proud of you.

I love you. And Jay, I’ll like you to know that even with all these worries of yours, Jesus does not see you the way people does. He loves you, regardless. He is the answer to all the questions you have about Him.

We have a three week holiday starting from next week, and I’ll be coming to your school with a friend to pay you a visit. I’m praying for you.

Take care, Jayden.

Your Sister,

Eloise Coker.

I woke around 4am today, feeling disturbed from a partial sleep. I switched on my data to check sports update, hoping that would at least, lighten me up. A mail immediately popped up on the notification bar. I rarely get mails, so I was surprised. It was Eloise, my sister.

I know I had emotions, but I am hardly one to show it. The narrative changed, for as I was reading Eloise’s letter, my eyes welled with tears that laid painful weights on my already shattering heart.

Eloise has always been one I knew I could confide in. She is skilled at dispensing the right words for the right moment, never castigates people, always ready to help. My own sister.

I could have told her my worries earlier, but I wasn’t sure how she would respond, because I believed everybody would respond the way my Dad did, the way my Mum did, the way Kelvin Carr did, the way my roommates did. My sister is different. And this message of hers, for the first time in two weeks or more, made me feel different.

And that made my morning. Diary, do you understand how much it means for only one person out of the entire universe to understand your worries? And when that person is your only sister? Totally lovely! I wanted this kind of love.

  3. I don't like your sister, Jayden. Even if she'd come to your aid, why so soon? Jayden was me, until your sister surfaced. What happens next? Jayden becomes who he used to be, and even better. No. No, please, make Jayden more confused. So, people like me could continue to relate.

  6. Soothing words!
While I read this, I remembered Proverbs 16:24 Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

There is so much about having a person around who understands you. I'm glad it was even Eloise, his sister. What if another person might have understood him and yet had no better solution to what disturbed Jayden?

    Thanks, Feranmi!

2021: Wins, Losses, Lessons, & People.

I think my initial struggle to put these thoughts into words, is the best note on which to begin this content. My mind housed the desire to write this review, at least, three weeks before I would later bring myself into the action. And for a consummate writer as I like to believe of myself, this was a particular subject of worry for me throughout the year.  I wrote, at least, three articles – a thousand words minimum – every week from January through August, all of them being paid gigs. It’s scary how money can be a crazy sponsor for motivation, because here’s the thing – the contents I wrote for money were not ones I had a thing for. They were mostly technical topics, which demanded tremendous amounts of diligence in the way of research. Besides two blogs of my own, I volunteer on two other blogs, where I write on topics and to the kind of audience that make my heart flutter.   I can recall more than two instances where I tried writing something on these topics...

Choices and Metamorphosis

What are choices? Choices are those decisive templates by which we live our lives. They are our daily premeditated actions, or decisive preferences. Of all the outfits packed in the diversity of your wardrobe, a black jean with a blue top was what you thought ideal to wear to a friend’s birthday party. That’s a choice. That’s your choice. You could have chosen another outfit, if you wanted to.  Choices play cardinal roles in the forms that our lives take, as humans. As a matter of fact, choices are the greatest weapons in our material arsenals. With your choices, you can make your life, and with your choices, you can break your life.  I was conversing with a mentor some two weeks ago, and he asked me why I had not yet implemented some of the goals I had for life. The question reflexively triggered my defenses. I gave him all the genuine reasons I thought I had in the world, and he told me something. “If you keep looking for excuses, you will always find them, and guess ...

4 Enriching Lessons From Gideon

Gideon is one of the many icons in the Bible, whose life, leadership, and walk with God provide a clear example of what God can achieve through a willing man. He served as Israel’s fifth major judge, and his destruction of baal, the pagan god, earned him the name Jerub-Baal, meaning the destroyer of Baal. Gideon embodied a rich history of faith that is as edifying today, as it was many thousand years ago. In this piece of content, I share 4 central lessons that can be gleaned from the life of Israel’s fifth judge. 4 Enriching Lessons from Gideon 1.       God Looks Beyond You When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon in verse 12 of Judges 6, he gave him a reference that exceeded the limits of his physical reality. He called Gideon a mighty man of valor. Another version refers to him as a mighty soldier. But, one would have asked how these labels of strength applied to a man who was clearly hiding in the bottom of a grane press ...
